Arsenal have triggered Jamie Vardy’s release clause in his contract

Arsenal are close to signing Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy after triggering a £20 million release clause in his contract.

The Guardian reports that Arsenal want to sign the striker after learning that Danny Welbeck will miss nine months due to injury.

Vardy scored 24 goals in the Premier League last season to lead Leicester City to their first Premier League title.

Goal also reports that Gunner coach Arsene Wenger wants to get all his transfer businesses done before the start of EURO 2016 having failed to sign an outfield player last summer.

Recall that Arsenal have signed tough tackling Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach for £30 million. 

The north London side want to sign a top class center back to rival the ageing Per Mertesacker. A £750,000 bid for Bolton Wanderers defender Rob Holding has been rejected.

High on the transfer shortlist is Roma defender Kostas Manolas but will have to beat off competition from Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United also interested.
